Week of June 11th

This week in science class I was sick Monday and Tuesday with a form of the flu. On Wednesday we had an assembly with a holocost speech during class. She was good. Then thursday we had our class trip to pocanoe valley. It was fun. Then on friday we had our science club trip that was a blast! I had a great time hiking. I really wnat to do it again. The best part was climbing though the rocks.

Week of June 7th

Monday and Tuesday this week Mr. Finley was out due to an accident. So on those two days we worked on questions questions on particles and atoms. Then on Wedsday when he came back we burned sugar. It turned black and fizzed and bubbled. On thursday and friday I was sick with a fever so I did not find out the conclusion yet. I will find that out today, tuesday. (my first day back since thursday)

Week of May 31st

This week in science we finished up our expiriments and handed in our labs. I feel I did fairly well on my lab. Although, doing volume was a very hard expirment to conduct. We learned that volume doesn't effect the size of a crater hole. But, we relized that maybe volume may effect the spray. Towards the end of the week we started chemestry. We really didn't get into it all yet but we went over the constuction of atoms and learned about conductors.

Week of May 23

Due to computer issues this post is a little late. This week in school we had our solar sprints for science club. My group won (Thanks to Nick P.) 2ND place for best portfolio. But the four days before we work on our lab reports. My group got volume. It is very hard to make a volume experiment without changing mass. So, Mr. Finley gave us the idea to test both. So, now we are testing volume and mass. On Tuesday we will start our experiment.

Week of May 15th

This week we learned more about circular motion. On Monday we learn what causes circular motion. Tuesday we finished up on our presentations. Matt, Brett, and I investigated weather the amount of holes affected how the filter paper falls. After doing the experiment we found that the more holes a filter has, the faster falls. On Wednesday we presented our projects to the class.  We did a very good job on ours. Then on Friday we had a quiz which was really easy.

Week of May 10th

This week in science we worked on why the moon revolves around the earth. We learned that it was put in motion by something in space. Also we learned that the moon always wants to go straight away and the earth pulls it to go to the center of the earth. So, the moon moves in between the two directions. It does it in whatever position the moon is, it forces it to go in a circle. Near Friday we did a lot more on forces. Also, we learned that when objects fall they fall at a rate that constantly increases. We also learned that all objects fall at the same speed, with no air pressure.

Week of April 25th

This week in science we learned about astronomy. It was really really cool. We went through all the solar system and at the end we saw all the different galaxies. We learn that the planets are EXTREMELY SMALL compared to the sun and the distance between planets is ginormous. We also learn that there are many dwarf planet like Pluto. Also, all planets make elliptical rotations, not perfect circles. We even learned the the Moon pulls the ocean up causing high tide.

Then in class we went over Newtons third law: Ever action has an equal and opposite reaction. We did many expiriment that support his law. First we had Brett and I throw a bowling ball to eachother while sitting on carts. Everytime I threw it and he caught it we both went back an equal distance. Then to top it of Mr. Finley ask us if one person could apply 10 newtons of force backward and the other 5 while both holding two spring scales. As hard as they tried every time they could not get it. On Friday we had our test. I know I knew the material but I think I was too confused on the wording of the questions and answers. I am not sure how I did, but I think I did not as well as I would have had hoped.

Week of April 9th

This week in science we continued our dynamics unit. We expiriment a lot. Mrs. B ran our classes since Mr. Finley was on a field trip with the 7th graders. We supporteed the hypothesis that the delta V arrows always go in the dircetion of the unbalanced forces in a motion diagram. We did this expiriment with a ball and person. We used Matt (as usual). For some reason he puts on a wierd face when he's up in front of the calss. It's funny. On Thursday we answered a text message quiz, it was fun.

Week of April 5th

Good news, bad news. Good new is science was fun this week. Bad news is a had a concussion on Friday at our lacrosse game. Back to science, this week I learned so much! On Monday I was out sick. On Tuesday we started our new unit, dynamics. We learned a lot about force. First we learned there are always forces pushing on an object. One that always pushes down is the earth. Another thing we learned was force diagrams. In the diagram you always draw the finshed product. When one arroy is greater than the other that means its using more force. We worked and practiced with this for a while. Then we learn the objects like a table apply a force. We conducted a few expiriments to prove this when doing our work sheet. Then on Friday we started learn about unbalanced force diagrams when there is only one force, then the bell rang.

Week of March 29th

This week in science class we continued with our physics unit. My partner Matt and I were on unit 11. On Monday we finished 11 and started 12. In these unit we did a lot of review from the previous chapters. Once we started 12 we finished it extremely fast. Then we made it to 13 on thursday. It took thursday and friday to finsh 13 leaving 14 and 15 for us to finish. Over our break I did 14 and started 15.

Week of March 15

This week in class we started lesson 7. It was hard to understand at first but then mr. finley explained to us that we were making the two cars crash. then we set up the expiriment and finished the worksheet. We did alot of graphing. The graphing helped predict where the two cars crashed. It was very useful.

Week of March 8th (LACROSSE SEASON!!!)

This week LACROSSE STARTED!! Oh right this is a science blog never mind. This week we had a quiz on last weeks topic and we learn new things. We really stress that it depends on the observer if somethings moving. Then we did an expiriment with a moving car. We did many work sheets on this. Then we learned dot diamgrams. They tell us how fast a thing moves in its time. On friday we did GEPA testing review. For homework we had a quiz which was easy but i couldnt email it because for some reason it wouldnt let me email.

Week of March 1st

This week we started ourunit of physics. It was hard to undrstand the begining of the lessons but Mr. Finely was very good at explaining. We use paper as a telescope to see how things moved. It was hard to get the consepts he was trying to teach us. I felt lost. but by the end of the day i got it. They way something moves is by the observer sees it.

Week of Feb. 14 (EXTRA CREDIT)

Week of Feb. 7th

On Monday we went over James Hutton. We talked about his theory of Uniformiterism and Catastrophism. We talked about the similarities and differences. On Tuesday and Wednesday we talked about elements and atoms.

-Elements: gases, liquids, solids; made up of atoms

-Atoms:make up elements; units/ quantities

If you take away neutrons from from an atom you get isotopes. If you take away electrons you get ions.

We also went over rock hardness. Here is the scale:

1 talc
2 gypsome
3 callsite
4 florite
5 feltzbar
6 appatite
7 quartz
8 topaz
9 corumun
10 diamand

Super Bowl Week of Science (Feb 1)

This week in science was very fun. Unfortunately i ended up being sick on Monday and Tuesday. Then, on Wednesday we had a snow day. I went in during study hall on Thursday and found out that our teacher went over the words heating and heat. He explained to us that heat is not a thing, but heating is. Heating things up is when hot particles touch other particles and heat the other ones up. Just like when you rub to books together. It gets hot from friction. Click here for a diagram. Then on Thursday we worked on classifying rock. Our home work was to bring in a rock to classify. My rock ended up being igneous. I knew this because under the microscope I saw large crystals and some air holes. I knew they were holes because the rock absorbed the water that i put on it. Then on Friday we discussed about the order rocks can turn into other rocks. Turns out that any rock can turn into any rock type. It can even turn into its self again.

Week of January 19th

Last Tuesday we focused on rocks throughout the week. On Tuesday we watched the inauguration. Then on Wednesday our teacher gave us different rocks. My group and came up with ideas on some of the rock. Eventually on Thursday we defined all the rocks. But on Friday I got sick and missed the work. I will go in during study hall to get the work i missed.

Week of January 19th

On Monday we began learning about the Law of Superposition and how to find which is the oldest to newest rock. There are pictures with descriptions on the HEATING link on my my page. The next day our teacher had us observe some rocks. We ended up finding out that the rocks were igneous. The were ridged, grey , shiny , and had a crystal in the side. Then the second rock had many holes. This rock was igneous too. The difference was that the first had a long time to cool and the second had a short time. We then did an experiment to see if we were right and we were right. The one from the experiment that had little time to cool was thin and had holes with small crystals, the one with a long time to cool was one huge crystal. On Friday we started a work sheet and didn't finish.

***We also worked on answering our study guide which i did. I had some questions. Here they are:

1. How do you calculate spreading of sea floor rate.
2.What was the fearless video, i thin i was absent that day, what was it on.
3.Riffle zone??? is that a Rift Valley???

Week of January 11

This week in science we learned a lot of new things which I found very interesting. We started off on Monday talking about heating not heat because heat is not a thing. We talked about the three different types of heating:

Radiation: transferring through space/air
Conduction: heating through touching
Convection: heating by movement of fluids

The next day we talked about the uses for gloves and we saw how they worked. They kept your hands warm and also protect them from heat. Mr. Finley drew two models on the board. The pictures are on the link on my blog called HEATING. The next day we went over how particles move when heated and how a lava lamp works. We also looked at how the lava lamp relates to how plates move. To see how the plates move click on the HEATING link. Then we saw how you can tell which rock is the oldest and which is the newest. You can tell by a volcano which is the newest because when it erupts the lava dries up on top of the previous rock and this happens over and over again. It is the law of Superposition.
